What’s it about?
GET /Speaking is a facilitated program to build skills and confidence with speaking in public .
Participants get to explore questions such as:
- What holds you back?
- What do you have to offer and how can youfind a subject that resonates for the audience?
- How would you prepare for a conference talk?
The program is “lite” on slides and heavy on practical tips. Much of the learning comes from sharing experiences, stories and aspirations with others on the program.
Who's it for?
As our community's flagship program, GET /Speaking, is exclusively available to Women In APIs community members. You can join here.It is particularly suitable for people who are at a point in their career where they want—or are being encouraged—to take their
first, or their next big, step with public speaking. People who get most from the course, typically have some 5 to 15 years’ experience in and around the technology industry. They are likely to do one or more of:
- Work in API design, engineering, implementation, or deployment.
- Manage or contribute to API product teams or API-related projects.
- Promote, market, or advocate for APIs.
- Implement and support API tooling and API management solutions.
- Lead or facilitate API-enabled change.
Participants are generally working in an environment with poor gender balance. They may not be native English speakers.
This program provides a valuable opportunity to network with members of our community as well as our partners at Google Cloud.
What's involved?
We run the program over three 2-hour (3 x 2hr) in-person sessions; at the same time once every week or every fortnight.
The format is small to create a safe space for sharing ideas and learning, and trying out things.
In addition, we arrange a one-off follow-up 1-on-1 coaching session with one of our seasoned speakers from the wider, global Women In APIs membership.
We have run fully remote versions of the program. The sessions are shorter (3 x 90 minutes each).
Who's involved in delivering the program?
We are fortunate to partner with the following organisations to be able to deliver GET /Speaking in different locations and timezones around the globe:
- APIsFirst Ltd (based in the UK)
- APIdays Inc (based in the US)
- Google Cloud Apigee (globally - key contact is based in the Netherlands)
Other volunteers and participants are involved in a personal capacity i.e. as a way to give back to other women looking for career help and guidance; or to join our programs to grow their professional networks and build skills and confidence with speaking in public.
What else?
We offer in-house versions of the program to organisations looking to expand their own pipeline of female speakers.
